Portion of U.S. M8A1 airstrip(210×336mm). GrelleM8A1 steel plates, developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, were used primarily for the rapid construction of temporary runways. These plates were used extensively during the Vietnam War in the late 1960s and early 1970s, particularly in the Air Force to base helicopters, light attack aircraft, and surveillance aircraft. They often appear in photographs of the time. Each slab, which measured 3660 x 560 mm, featured a corrugated surface that facilitated effective rainwater drainage. U.S. Army engineering units were responsible for their installation. The slabs could be connected staggered or in rows, enabling the construction of both small sites and large airfields.
