Book Republic F-84F Thunderstreak With nearly 3,500 built, the Thunderstreak was the first fighter-bomber to be equipped with arrow wings and was used in 12 countries around the world. Unlike many of its contemporaries, the F-84F remained in service for a long time: the first examples entered service in 1954, the last were retired from service in the 1980s. This book shows every detail of the jet, from the air intake to the fuselage, from the wings to the aerobrakes and landing gear. Of course, the cockpit is also shown in detail and color photos of the actions are included. Thunderstreaks from Belgium, the United States, the Netherlands, Greece, France, Italy, Germany, etc. are included.
Book Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa by Daniel Kowalczuk One of the great and little celebrated fighters of the Imperial Japanese Air Force was Nakajima's Ki-43 Hayabusa (Pilgrim Falcon). Codenamed "Oscar" by the Allies, the plane was often mistaken for the Navy's A6M2 Zero by those who encountered it in combat, to the point that it was widely referred to by its opponents as the "Army 0." Highly regarded in Japan, where it was much more widely recognized than the Zero, the Ki-43 was the only Japanese fighter of the Pacific War to be employed in active service with other air forces, being supplied to both Thailand and Manchukuo by the Japanese, but also employed by France in Indochina and by the air forces of Indonesia, the Republic of China, and North Korea.I put abandoned but flightworthy aircraft back into service, some of which survived into the early 1950s. Author Daniel Kowalczuk has compiled a compelling account that contextualizes the aircraft, details its development and active-duty history, and explains how it became so popular with the Japanese that it was the aircraft of choice for anime producers rather than its better-known contemporary.
Book McDONNELL FH-1 PHANTOM 64 pages, glue-bound, color cover, 159 black-and-white photos, 4 color photos, 25 drawings, 6 insignia. By Steve Ginter The first purpose-built embarked jet fighter built by the U.S. Navy was the McDonnell FD-1/FH-1 Phantom, first ordered in January 1943. The small, sleek aircraft had a long gestation period due to the delay in the development of its Westinghouse jet engines. Initially, six and even eight small 300-pound (136 kg) thrust engines embedded in the wing were considered before two 1,600-pound (727 kg) thrust engines were chosen. These were mounted just outside the wing roots and allowed the use of conventional flaps and ailerons of any size on the wing. It was equipped with tricycle landing gear, tail hook and catapult. The 800 km/h aircraft first flew in 1946, and two XFD-1 prototypes were built along with 60 FD-1/FH-1 production aircraft, with half of the FH-1s destined for the Navy's VF-17A/VF-171 carrier squadron and half for the Marine squadron VMF-122. The Navy operated with its full squadron aboard USS Saïé-ËÅSaipan (CVL-48) and USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB-42), demonstrating the viability of jets and aircraft carriers. The Marines also deployed an FH-1 flight demonstration team, "The Flying Leathernecks." The FH-1 had no problems in flight and, with new engines, the Phantom was redesigned into the largest and most successful embarked fighter of the Korean War, the F2H Banshee. Phantoms were relegated to the reserves by 1950.
Book Grumman FF/SF Plus G-23 Delfin/Goblin and Prototypes by Richard S. Dann 132 pages (128 black and white, plus 4 in color), 363 photos and drawings The Grumman FF-1 and its derivatives, namely the SF-1 and G-23, represented a paradox in naval aircraft design. On the one hand, they represented the end of the U.S. Navy's line of two-seat fighters in the biplane era. On the other, they incorporated relatively new technologies that, combined, gave the FF-1 a significant performance edge over existing U.S. Navy fighters. Indeed, design choices such as retractable landing gear, enclosed cockpits, and all-aluminum construction had existed before, but the FF-1 incorporated all of these technologies in a single airframe. In the Navy's own words, "The design ofThe XFF-1 marked a major advance in reducing weight and aerodynamic drag for this class of aircraft, while providing equally high performance. " The FF-1's origins date back to early 1930, a few months after the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation's articles of incorporation were filed. During discussions with the Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics regarding their "A" floatplane, the Navy was intrigued by Grumman's approach to retractable landing gear. The Navy asked Grumman about the feasibility of adapting their patented landing gear system to existing Navy fighters, such as the Boeing F4B and Curtiss F8C. Grumman advised against this approach, stating that adding retractable landing gear to these existing aircraft would require a complete redesign. Moreover, being an aircraft manufacturing company, Grumman wanted to design and build its own aircraft. Grumman's G-5 design was presented to the Navy and, in March 1931, it was awarded a contract for the XFF-1 . The Fighter NF121 series is an in-depth study of the design and development of the FF-1 and its derivatives. The first half of the book details the XFF-1, FF-1, XSF-1, SF-1, XSF-2, GG-1, and XSBF-1 with photographs and drawings, while the second half of the book covers operational employment. While service in the U.S. Navy was limited to two fleet squadrons, the FF-1 and SF-1 enjoyed long careers in Navy and Marine Corps Reserve squadrons until mid-1942. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this series was the G-23, a derivative built under license by Canadian Car & Foundry of Fort William, Ontario, Canada. A total of 52 G-23s were built, of which 34 entered combat service by Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War. The Spanish "Delfin," as it was known, was in extended service after the war, with the last example retired in early 1954, nearly 22 years after the first. The flight of the XFF-1. 15 G-23s were accepted by the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 under the name "Goblin," and their service is also included in this book. This book is a fascinating in-depth study of a little-known Navy fighter that set the stage for Grumman's dominance in carrier-borne naval aircraft, which lasted more than 50 years. Numerous MPM/Special Hobbies kits of this aircraft have been published.
Dassault Super Etendard Book This book shows every detail of the compact jet used for 4 decades by the French Navy, from the cockpit to the fuselage, landing gear, wings, engine exhaust, and, as per tradition, an extensive chapter on maintenance. The book also includes numerous pictures of the aircraft in action, both in flight and on the deck of the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.
Book Boeing F4B written by retired Navy Capt. Richard S. Dann, is a 160-page work enhanced by 408 black-and-white photos and 24 drawings. After three years of intensive research, author Richard S. Dann has finally produced the definitive history of the Boeing F4B, the iconic Navy fighter aircraft of the golden years. The Boeing F4B, a favorite of the pilots who flew it, still piques the interest of enthusiasts and historians, primarily because of the striking liveries worn by these aircraft during their service. Boeing, a company active since 1916, has produced numerous combat aircraft for both the U.S. Army and Navy. Deriving from the successful PW-9 series for the Army, Boeing developed what can be considered the first truly successful embarked.fighter aircraft with their FB series. First flown in 1925, the FB paved the way for the development of several subsequent aircraft for the Navy, namely the F2B and F3B. These aircraft were produced using state-of-the-art techniques, being built with welded tube fuselages and wooden wing structure, with fabric-covered surfaces. These standard construction methods were also used in the Boeing Models 83 and 89, which were built on a speculative basis, tested by the Navy in 1928 and later purchased as the XF4B-1. Quite impressed with their performance, the Navy ordered 27 F4B-1s with deliveries starting in 1929. A second version, the F4B-2, was developed with improvements over the initial model and also put into production with 27 built. In the early 1930s, the use of traditional welded tube fuselage construction techniques gave way to airframes produced from lightweight aluminum alloys. The use of semi-monocoque aluminum with stressed inner coating offered lighter airframes and, consequently, higher performance. In the F4B series, this was first seen on the company-funded Model 218 prototype, which bridged the gap between earlier and later versions of the F4B. Later versions of the F4B, the F4B-3 and F4B-4, were partially constructed of aluminum alloys, first used on the Model 218, instead of steel tubes, offering high strength and light weight. Only 21 F4B-3s were built before Boeing switched production to the F4B-4, of which 92 were built. Boeing's F4B dominated the U.S. Navy's fighter squadrons and some bombers from 1931 to 1935, with the last F4B squadrons transitioning to service in 1938. As F4Bs were phased out of frontline service, they were turned over to the training command and later used as unmanned aerial targets for training airborne anti-aircraft artillery crews under Project FOX. The last F4Bs were retired from service in 1942. The first half of this 160-page monograph covers the history of F4B development. Every version from the F4B-1 to the F4B-4 is covered, as well as Boeing's Model 218, which served as the prototype for the F4B-3 and F4B-4. 408 photographs and 24 drawings provide an in-depth study of each version. Much of the data in this section comes from test reports and specification documents of the time. In addition, a chronology of each aircraft is provided, including squadron assignments, accidents, strike dates, final destination and total flight hours, if known. An operational chronology of each Navy and Marine Corps squadron that employed the F4B, as well as other Navy/Marine Corps commands that employed this model, follows. Also included is a chronology of Boeing Models 256 and 267, export variants sold to Brazil, and the F4B-4A, which consisted of P-12s supplied to the Navy. Only two F4Bs were delivered to civilian operators, and their civilian use is also included in this book. The last chapter on aircraft illustrates eight new-build Boeings under construction in Gardnerville, Nevada, since 1993. The first of these aircraft is expected to fly in late 2023 to early 2024. As with almost all of Ginter's books, the last chapter is devoted to model kits. In the latest book in Steve Ginter's "Naval Fighters" series, you will find many interesting facts you may not know about the F4B.

Book Grumman A-6 Intruder and EA-6B ProwlerThe U.S. Navy's experience in the Korean War showed the need for a new long-range attack aircraft with high subsonic performance at very low altitude, capable of penetrating enemy defenses and finding and destroying small targets in all weather conditions. The Grumman A-6 Intruder was designed with these requirements in mind and was a real truck bomb. From the jungles of Vietnam to the deserts of Iraq, the Intruder proved its worth, capable of capturing a plethora of weapons and delivering a powerful punch. The KA-6D tanker variant was derived from the Intruder airframe, along with the specialized EA-6A Intruder and then the EA-6B Prowler, a sophisticated four-seat electronic warfare variant equipped with jamming equipment and electronics. Like the A-6, the Prowler was used by both the Navy and the Marine Corps. After nearly thirty-seven years and with 693 aircraft built, VA-34 the Blue Blasters, on February 28, 1997, retired the Navy's last operational A-6E Intruders. The Navy retired its Prowlers in 2015, however, the Marine Corps continued to fly the EA-6B until early 2019. Warpaint 146 is filled with all the usual historical and reference material, with walk-throughs of both the Prowler and Intruder, full-color illustrations by Sam Pearson, and a well-paced narrative that places this essential aircraft in context and shows its role in U.S. naval operations for nearly sixty years.
Book Blackburn BuccaneerThe Blackburn Buccaneer is one of those typical British aircraft designs that proved to be more versatile and effective than originally intended. Although it was extremely stable when flying at high speed and very low altitude for both the Fleet Air Arm and the Royal Air Force, it was toward the end of its career that it achieved the prominence it so richly deserved; during the first Gulf War, the few Blackburn Buccaneers that were deployed became important resources for other aircraft to destroy targets with precision weapons. In this book, we show you a close-up of this magnificent jet. A close-up that was made possible with the help of the Buccaneer Aviation Group. [S.2B S.2C]
