Nieuport XI Italian Service aircraft kit in 1/32 scale - Copper State Models. The Nieuport 11 Early Version is a key aircraft in World War I history, introduced in early 1916 to meet the challenges posed by the German Fokker Eindecker series during the "Fokker Scourge." This model features long cockpit side panels, a distinctive feature of this aircraft. Powered by an 80-horsepower Le Rhône rotary engine, the Nieuport 11 reached speeds of about 175 km/h, making it one of the fastest biplanes of its time. Its innovative sesquiplane design, featuring a shorter lower wing, gave it exceptional maneuverability. As the Allies sought to regain control of the skies, the Nieuport 11 proved instrumental in countering the Fokker threat, proving to be a reliable and effective fighter. This historically accurate model captures the essence of this legendary aircraft, making it a must-have piece for modelers and aviation history enthusiasts. The front part of the fuselage was made of steel tubes, while the rear part was made of wood, canvas-covered trellis. The flaps were double-beam upper and single-beam with a slight slope, both covered with canvas. Wooden struts supported the V-flap chambers. The tail was made of canvas-covered steel tubes. There was no tailplane, only a floating rudder. The first flight of the prototype took place in 1915, and a year later the plane entered scheduled service. The Nieuport 11 was small, very maneuverable, and quite fast. An 80-hp Le Rhone 9C engine was used as the powerplant. The plane possessed excellent flying characteristics. Being a scaled-down version of the Nieuport 10, it earned the affectionate nickname "Bebe" (kid in French). The first flight took place on January 5, 1916, and by February there were already 90 of them at the front. It was thanks to him that the "Fokker E problem" was broken, although these planes did not yet have synchronizers. The problem was solved in a rather simple way: the gun was placed on the top panel so that it fired above the propeller circle. This was extremely inconvenient for the pilot, since the Lewis gun with which the Nieuport 11 was equipped had only 47 rounds (later 96) in the magazine. The only way to replace it was to climb into the cabin and, holding the magazine with his feet, change the ammunition drum. Later, rifles began to be mounted on a "Foster rail," which allowed them to be pulled into the cab. This idea was readily used by British ace Albert Ball. He flew toward the enemy plane from below and, pointing the gun almost vertically upward via the rail, fired the burst into the defenseless belly of the enemy, remaining completely covered by it. In the second half of 1916, a more powerful 110-hp Le Rhone engine was installed on the Nieuport 11. This version was named Nieuport 16. This model did not differ from the Nieuport 11. Because of the increased engine weight, the Nieuport 16 lost some of its flight characteristics. Therefore, it was decided to slightly increase the load-bearing area to improve the situation.
