The first examples produced were made using the VK 45.01 (P) hull and were named "Ferdinand" in honor of the famous designer Ferdinand Porsche. Heavily armored and armed with the powerful 88mm cannon capable of destroying opposing tanks at great distances, they made their debut in the Battle of Kursk, the largest clash of armored vehicles in History.
