Description

Soviet LaGG-3 fighter plane kit in 1/48 scale - Zvezda model.

The LaGG-3 was a Soviet single-seat fighter aircraft used during World War II, developed by Lavochkin, Gorbunov and Gudkov, after whom it was named (LaGG). Derived from the predecessor model LaGG-1, the LaGG-3 was designed to improve aircraft performance while maintaining a lightweight structure built primarily of wood, as aluminum was a scarce resource in the Soviet Union during the conflict.

Key features

  • Type: Single-seat fighter.

  • Engine: V-12 Klimov M-105P engine.

  • Maximum speed: Approximately 575 km/h.

  • Armament:

    • One 20-mm cannon mounted in the center.

    • Two 7.62-mm ShKAS machine guns.

    • Could be equipped with rockets and light bombs for attacks against ground targets.

  • Structure: The wooden fuselage made it relatively cheap and quick to build, although it was also more vulnerable to shell damage.

Employment and Role.

  • Used by the Soviet Air Force primarily as an interceptor fighter, for protection of troops on the ground and on bomber escort missions.

  • It was operational on various fronts, and although it had inferior performance compared to German fighters such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the LaGG-3 proved to be effective mainly in experienced hands due to its maneuverability.

Evolution

Although it was reliable, the LaGG-3 was gradually replaced by the Lavochkin La-5, which mounted a more powerful radial engine and filled performance gaps compared to enemy aircraft.
