1/48 Nakajima A6M2-N Rufe national insignia (for Eduard)
Nakajima A6M2-N "Rufe" is a variant of the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane, but with a slightly different design and origin.
After a miscommunication between Mitsubishi and Nakajima, the Nakajima company decided to develop a derivative model of the A6M2 Zero suitable for operation as a fighter seaplane. The result was the Nakajima A6M2-N "Rufe," designated as the Model 11. Unlike the original A6M2 Zero, the Rufe was a seaplane with built-in fixed floats.
Here are some main features of the Nakajima A6M2-N Rufe:
Seaplane structure: The main distinguishing feature of the Rufe was its ability to operate from water surfaces, thanks to fixed floats mounted under the wings. This also allowed it to be employed from seaplane bases or ships with seaplane-specific takeoff and landing decks.
Performance: The Rufe retained many of the features of its A6M2 Zero predecessor, including being powered by a Nakajima Sakae radial engine. This gave it good speed and maneuverability performance.
Operational Role: The A6M2-N Rufe was used primarily for coastal defense, maritime patrol and naval convoy support. Its ability to operate from seaplane bases enabled it to cover large sea areas and provide some protection against enemy air attacks.
Limited production: Unlike the A6M2 Zero, the Rufe was produced in very limited quantities. Production of the Rufe began only in 1942 and ended in the same year. Therefore, the number of aircraft produced was relatively small compared to other Japanese models of the time.
Although the Nakajima A6M2-N Rufe was not a mass-production aircraft like the A6M2 Zero, it played an important role in Japanese coastal defense operations during World War II.
