The AV-8B Harrier is a short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) fighter aircraft developed by the British company Hawker Siddeley in the 1970s and later manufactured by McDonnell Douglas (and later Boeing) in the United States.
The Harrier's unique design allows it to operate from very short takeoff platforms, such as warship decks or forward bases in limited terrain. This is made possible by an air-jet displacement system, known as "V/STOL" (Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing), which allows the aircraft to lift off vertically or take off from much shorter runways than conventional fighter jets.
The Harrier has played a crucial role in the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force (RAF) and the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and other air forces around the world. It has been used in various missions, including reconnaissance, ground attack and close air support. During the 1982 Falklands War, RAF Harriers played a significant role in countering Argentine forces during the recapture of the Falklands.
Over the years, the Harrier has undergone various evolutions and improvements, with the introduction of new variants, such as the AV-8B Harrier II Plus. This version was equipped with an advanced electronic suite, new weapons and improved combat capability. The Harrier II Plus was used in military operations and air support missions in the 1990s and early 2000s.
In 2006, the U.S. Marine Corps retired its AV-8B Harrier IIs and handed over the role of vertical takeoff aircraft to the more modern Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II, which is also capable of operating in STOVL mode.
The Harrier was an innovative and revolutionary aircraft in aviation history because of its ability to operate from small bases and platforms. Although its production has been discontinued, its contribution and importance in military aviation remains a significant legacy.
