1/35 Chernobyl #6 Feat of Divers (3 figures)
In the first days after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, firefighters extinguished the flames by pouring water on the fire and sprinkling the ignition chambers with sand and pebbles. This helped prevent potentially dire consequences. Five days later, however, the situation became more complicated as the reactor continued to melt, gradually destroying the concrete slab under which lay a huge pool of water. Contact of the roasted mass with water could release a giant cloud of radioactive water vapor into the atmosphere. To avoid a possible disaster, the pool had to be drained immediately, so the situation required the involvement of people with diving skills because access to the resistance taps was underwater. Three people were involved in this operation. The divers knew they would be exposed to radiation in the pool, but they safely reached the shutoff valves. It took a few tries, but they were up to the task and their feat has become the stuff of legend.
