The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17, was a first-generation single-engine jet-powered multirole fighter aircraft, single-seat, medium-wing, arrow-mounted monoplane, designed by OKB 155 jointly directed by Artëm Ivanovic Mikojan and Michail Iosifovic Gurevic and developed in the Soviet Union in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

An evolution of the MiG-15 and built to provide the USSR with a multi-role aircraft, in addition to its role as a tactical fighter also that of an all-weather interceptor fighter, it was employed in its various versions, including for photo reconnaissance and two-seat training, mainly by Voenno-vozdušnye sily (V-VS), air force, Vojska protivovozdušnoj oborony (PVO) (air defense) and Aviacija voenno-morskogo flota, naval aviation of the Soviet Union, but also massively exported and used by numerous pro-Soviet air forces, involved in numerous conflicts, and remaining operational for much of the late 20th century in the most important military aviations, extending its operation in smaller ones even into the early 21st century.

In addition to the Soviet production there were license-built examples from China, referred to locally as J-4, J-5 and JJ-5 depending on version, and Poland, from WSK-PZL, referred to locally as LIM, LIM-2 to LIM-6 depending on version. The correspondence, albeit with minor variations in fittings and propulsion, was almost indistinguishable by NATO observers from those of Soviet prodition, continuing to identify them by the code name Fresco.
