1/72 M4A1 Sherman Normandy
The M4 Sherman was a U.S. medium tank, the standard vehicle in this category in service with the United States Army beginning in February 1942. It was built taking into consideration the developments in armored warfare, introduced in Europe by the Wehrmacht, and the need to have large mobile formations available quickly. Armed with a gradually upgraded 75-mm piece and a pair of machine guns, it operated with U.S. forces during World War II and then in the Korean War, generally successfully, although it had to complain about the ease of catching fire when hit, due to the location of the ammunition in the hull and the relatively modest armor (both problems related to the early versions). In its evolutions it managed to become the wagon with the best survival rate (chance of the crew being saved if the wagon is hit) of the war. The myth that it caught fire easily originated mainly from British mechanics, who saw many of them arrive charred, ignoring the fact that tankers were instructed to burn the vehicle if it was to be abandoned and that, if the ammunition reserves were hit, they did not detonate immediately, leaving time for the occupants to escape. During and after the world conflict it was supplied in large quantities to Washington's allies, and an assiduous operator was Israel, which kept the tank in service until the early 1970s. Still in 2006 the Sherman was being used by the Chilean Army.
Equipped with reliable mechanics and a versatile hull, the Sherman was the tank built in the largest number of units in World War II along with the Soviet T-34 (more than 49 000 in nineteen versions) and was the progenitor of several other armored tanks including fighters and self-propelled vehicles, which in turn were supplied in thousands.
