1/48 Sopwith Camel 2F.1 Lewis Gun (for Eduard)
The Sopwith Camel was a single-seat biplane fighter plane produced by the British Sopwith Aviation Company in the 1910s and used by numerous air forces during World War I.
Production was begun in 1916 by the Sopwith Aviation Company. The plane was armed with two Vickers machine guns mounted in front of the cockpit, and was the first British fighter with synchronized fixed weapons (firing through the propeller blades). The mount of these guns and the casing protecting the breeches formed a hump behind the engine that gave the plane its name: Camel, meaning camel in English.
It could also be armed with eight phosphorus rockets, electrically ignited, for shooting down Zeppelin airships.
1,294 enemy aircraft were shot down with it, more than any other Allied fighter aircraft of the Great War.
It was not easy to fly, and many inexperienced pilots crashed by going into a spin or stall due to a strong gyroscopic effect from the engine's considerable torque and variable behavior under various flight conditions. In the hands of experienced pilots this flaw became a winning weapon: for example, the very tight left turn, which was impossible for opposing aircraft.
Pilots claimed that the Camel gave two alternatives to those who flew it: either the Victoria Cross, a merit badge, or death.
In 1917 the Camel's speed and handling made it an air superiority fighter, and it was an unpleasant surprise to enemy pilots. By 1918, however, the Camel's speed, and ability to fly above 3500 m were insufficient. This led to many losses in the spring of 1918 (especially in the so-called Bloody April), and changes in the use that was made of this aircraft. Indeed, the Camels became low-altitude fighter-bombers (they could also bomb in a half dive with remarkable accuracy), taking advantage of their superior maneuverability to evade enemy fighters. Given the numerous losses inflicted by anti-aircraft, however, a version with light armor was tested (but not mass-produced) toward the end of the conflict. A modified night fighter version (Camel-Comic) was also built (with two Lewis machine guns above the upper wing instead of Vikers and a cockpit moved to the rear), which achieved some success. Until the end of the war the Camels were used on the front lines, although by the last months of the conflict they were beginning to be outgunned.
The Sopwith Snipe was to replace it but entered service in the final months, too late for mass use.
