The Sturmhaubitze 42, short for the full name Sturmgeschütz III für 10.5 cm Sturm Haubitze 42, whose identification number was Sd.Kfz. 142/2, was a German Army assault gun employed in the second half of World War II. It was designed as a replacement for the Sturmgeschütz III, which had evolved from a means of close infantry support into a viable anti-tank weapon; the new vehicle was still based on the hull of the Panzer III from which the Sturmgeschütz was derived, but in the casemate it housed a slightly modified 105-mm leFH 18 howitzer. The StuH 42 became operational during 1943 and was built in more than a thousand units, serving until the end of the war sometimes in a counter-tank role.
