1/48 R-40RD (AA-6 Acrid) Missiles MiG-25PD/PDS Focbat (2 Pcs.)
The R-40 or K-40, known as the AA-6 Acrid (NATO designation) in the West, is a Soviet-made air-to-air missile (English: AAM - Air to Air Missile).
The Bisnovat Technical Bureau (Molnya OKB or OKB-4) began development of a long-range air-to-air missile in 1962. The result was the R-40 initially coupled to the Smerch A (tornado) radar of the MiG-25P. It was assembled in two different versions, the R-40R with semi-active radar guidance and the R-40T (????????, thermal) with infrared (passive) guidance. The infrared missile's seeker head was cooled with liquid nitrogen.
Following the defection of PVO pilot Viktor Ivanovich Belenko in 1976, Vympel developed an improved version of the missile with a system that made it less susceptible to electronic countermeasures and a more sensitive seeker system. The new missile was designated by the new suffix D, for dorabotanaya, complete. Later the D1 version was also developed.
Production of the R-40 missile ended in 1991, but it remained in service with the last MiG-25s and also on some MiG-31s.
