1/35 StuG III Ausf. G 1945 Alkett Prod.
The Sturmgeschütz III, a designation often abbreviated to StuG III, was an assault gun issued to the German Army during World War II, fashioned from the hull of the Panzer III medium tank. Installing the main armament in casemates instead of in a revolving turret, although it made the weapon system less effective than a tank, it made the vehicle easier to produce and cheaper. The idea of the assault gun was conceived by Colonel (later General) von Manstein in 1935 as a way of providing close artillery support to infantry units for the elimination of unprotected obstacles (e.g., machine gun nests, pillboxes, counter-tank weapons, etc.), so originally the Sturmgeschütz were not intended to engage tanks. In the course of the war the tactical employment of the Sturmgeschütz was changed, and beginning in 1942, in addition to infantry support they were employed as tank fighters, leaving the task exclusively of infantry support to the Sturmhaubitze 42 . In the last months of the war, contrary to General Guderian's opinion, they were tactically even used as tanks.
