Description

1/48 F/A-18E/F Super Hornet Wheel Bay (for Revell)

The Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet, initially known as the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Super Hornet, is a twin-engine embarked multi-role fighter based on the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet produced by Boeing. It is an enlarged and advanced version of the F/A-18C and D of the Hornet.

Designed and initially produced by McDonnell Douglas, the Super Hornet first flew in 1995. Full-scale production began in September 1997, following the merger of McDonnell Douglas and Boeing the previous month. The Super Hornet entered service with the United States Navy in 1999, replacing the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, which was retired in 2006, and serves alongside the original Hornets.

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) began using F/A-18As as its main fighter aircraft from 1984, and also purchased F/A-18Fs in 2007 to replace the outdated F-111s. Super Hornets entered service with the RAAF in December 2010.

It was ordered and delivered 565 examples of the E and F versions for United States Navy and 24 examples of the F version for the Royal Australian Air Force. Recently it appears that the German Ministry of Defense is interested in purchasing 40 examples of the fighter to replace Panavia Tornado fighters. It has a 20 mm M61A2 internal cannon, can load air-to-air missiles, air-to-surface missiles and bombs. It can load additional fuel into five external fuel tanks, also can be configured as an in-flight refueler.
