1/48 Vought F4U-4 Corsair - Battle of Jangjin Reservoir
The Chance Vought F4U Corsair was a U.S. fighter produced by the Chance Vought Corporation (a company that later became the United Aircraft Corporation). It was used mainly in World War II and during the Korean War. It was the best carrier-based fighter of World War II, but it proved to be extraordinarily effective even ground-based and unbeatable in ground attack, in many respects superior even to the P-51 Mustang. Despite its qualities, it spent half its career ashore, as the U.S. Navy initially considered it unsuitable for aircraft carriers. It recorded an extraordinary amount of air victories. In the Pacific alone, the F4U shot down 2,140 Japanese planes, compared to the loss of 189 Corsairs, a shoot-down-to-loss ratio still unmatched. It was produced for ten years, until December 1952, the longest-running American aircraft in production, until the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II.12,571 were produced, and the last remained in service until 1965.
