The Messerschmitt Bf 110, also referred to later as the Messerschmitt Me 110, was the first Zerstörer ("destroyer"), twin-engine, multirole, low-wing fighter produced by the German company Messerschmitt AG. It was used primarily by the Luftwaffe, during World War II.
Despite some operational difficulties, the Bf 110 Zerstörer remained the standard German heavy fighter throughout the conflict and one of the designs dearest to Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring and Generaloberst Ernst Udet; it also proved to have high development potential. In fighter-bomber versions it carried out thousands of ground attack and anti-ship missions on various fronts. The Bf 110 is best remembered for shooting down thousands of Allied bombers, especially in the air defense of the Reich, both in the day interceptor role and in the night fighter versions.
